HOW TO CULTURE MICRO WORMS
Requirements
Starter culture
Container with sealable lid.
Quick Oats
Bakers Yeast
Dechlorinated, RO or distilled water
Cotton wool, filter floss or paper towel.
Method
Prepare oats in a separate container and pour boiling / warm water over oats. Mix well until oats have absorbed water, and is a fluffy / sticky consistency. Ensure oats are not runny and wet.
Add a 2cm layer of oats to the bottom of the container and spread evenly. Set aside to cool down.
Once cooled, add starter culture to oat media and spread evenly.
Sprinkle small amount of yeast into culture for initial boost.
Make a small hole in lid of container as a breather hole. Stuff hole with filter floss or cotton wool. If not available tape paper towel over the outside of hole to cover. This prevents pests from entering the culture.
Harvesting
Once culture is established worms will begin moving up the sides of container. Taking your finger, cotton wool bud or brush you can remove worms from side of container and feed directly to tank.
Worms will last approximately 8 - 12 hours inside the tank. Ensure you don’t overfeed.
Re-Culturing
Cultures will become exhausted after a few months depending on size of culture and additional feeding. Cultures will become stinky, runny consistency and off colour. Time to re-culture.
Take some of the original culture and set aside.
Repeat steps outlined in method and seed new culture with original worms.
Recommendations
Yeast can be fed to your microworms to boost the culture size. Be careful not to overfeed. Additional feeding will exhaust the culture media quicker with build up of worm waste.
We recommend starting minimum of 2 cultures. This allows a backup culture if one crashes, and prevents overharvesting of your main culture. You will require several cultures if you intend for heavy feeding.
Store away from direct sunlight in temperatures approximately 20-29 degrees celsius.
Other culture media can be used, such as mashed potato flakes, starch and bread. We use quick oats, and works well for us, if you wish to explore other media please do further research.
